Story: "I never listen to my patients"

I know I'm mixing metaphors here, but the woman who shared this story was seriously strong so she needed a seriously strong picture.

I don't know what these new doctors are being taught in medical school but what I can tell you that many doctors seriously do not care about their patients.

I am a disabled veteran and go to the Sioux Falls, SD VA. Being hospitalized and unable to breathe, the VA kept wanting to check my heart. I kept telling that there was something wrong with my lungs and not my heart.

Long story short, I was given a heart test and my heart was fine. (I already told the doctors that). This young doctor came into my room and told me that I had to go home since there was nothing wrong with my heart. I told this doctor that I could not breathe and there was something wrong with my lungs. The doctor looked at me and told me, "I never listen to my patients."

Well, really? At 53 years of age I think I know my body. I ripped the doctor a new one and told him I was not going to leave until my lungs were checked. He immediately called a VA psychologist on me and put a guard at my door. Now, I do have a witness as the head nurse was present when the doctor 'dissed' me and the nurse told me that she wished more people would stick up for themselves.

The next day, I had my lungs checked: PFT, CT Scan and low and behold I have suspicious nodes in both of my lungs, both lower lobes are scarred and are not working and I have emphysema.

Moral of the story is: If you see a doctor and he or her refuses to listen to you, the patient, get up and leave immediately and do not pay them for their service since you never received any medical service.

I have also had doctors tell me they will only listen to "one issue at a time". This is totally wrong as a person can have several symptoms that are the cause of an underlying disease.

Because I stuck up for myself at the VA Hospital I have been marked as a trouble maker. Go figure that; I am a trouble maker because I know there is something wrong with my body and a doctor refused to listen to me, his patient.

I have even more horror stories from doctors that have written false reports. I currently have my State Attorney General investigating.
